This is a romance, but it’s not Hollywood. It’s sparse in plot and settings, realistic about working and living conditions, and has unexceptional, unromantic characters. It’s a droll, downbeat, deadpan comedy – with songs. It’s fable-like yet grounded, and it’s enchanting.
Ansa works in a Helsinki supermarket. In the yard, the security guard sees her give out-of-date food from a trolly to a homeless man, and keep a sandwich for herself. She’s sacked, without notice. She tells the shop manager that as she’s on a zero hours contract, she isn’t entitled to notice anyway. Two colleagues walk out in solidarity with her.
