Environmentalists’ ongoing anger over the decimation of Tasmania’s old growth forest bubbled over into outrage this August, thanks to viral footage of a logging truck carrying a giant tree – usually protected by law.
Tasmania is rare as a region with a negative carbon footprint: almost all its electricity is renewably generated, mainly hydroelectric, and its forests are huge carbon sinks. But ongoing tree-felling puts that at risk.
