Hundreds of small-scale farmers in Panama have been protesting for secure tenure on land they have farmed for almost 20 years, following repeated eviction attempts by authorities seeking to make way for a Del Monte fruit plantation.
In 2003, eight hundred families set up co-operatives to grow crops on abandoned land in Baru province, western Panama, owned by the Panamanian state. But in 2017, Panama’s government signed a contract with Del Monte Fresh for a huge banana plantation.
