‘An extraordinary and world-renowned public figure’; ‘a towering global personality and an outstanding leader’ – these were the glowing tributes from Africa’s political leaders following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. But among the citizens of African nations and the African diaspora, these sentiments are far from universally shared.
In fact some, like Uju Anya, a Nigerian-Trinidadian-American and Critical Race Theory Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, consider the Queen’s death an occasion to shine a light on Britain’s colonial legacy. Much of Africa was colonized by Britain for nearly a century.
