It’s not news that the worldwide comics franchise Marvel is in the business of depicting the United States as the world’s problem solver – from the conspicuously named super-soldier ‘Captain America’ to the ageless military veteran Nick Fury who led an allied defence against the Nazis during World War Two. Marvel has long played on nostalgia for a ‘better’ America.
Now the film enterprise is accused of being complicit in the military-industrial complex. Deals which allow crews to access military equipment can require total script approval. Comics newsite CBR.com reported that as well as receiving budgetary funding from the US and British defence ministries, the cast of Captain Marvel also took part in adverts for the US Air Force in a bid to recruit more women to the job.
