A rom-com that raises profound questions about what it is to be human? Surely not! One that gets you smiling, even laughing, rather than heading to the exit or reaching for the remote? Is it possible? What if the main character is a career-focused woman, highly resistant to charms and blandishments, and your instinct tells you the story demands she falls for the handsome charmer? Even when he’s played by a heart-throb actor from soft soapy Downton Abbey?
Well, it helps that the rom-com is German and that Dan Stevens does German with an English accent and presents a slightly stiff, blank geniality that’s often very funny. But then he is playing a prototype humanoid robot, a set-up the film plays on to ask what it is that makes us human.
