Before the expulsion, Diego Garcia had been full of life. Children’s laughter resonated among the coconut trees. The islanders would be singing away while working in the plantations or weaving baskets.
Today, only some dilapidated huts still stand, last witnessses of the life that the Chagossians once enjoyed. The rest of the villages have been destroyed and replaced with the concrete buildings of the defence base.
