The leftwing leadership of the city of Marseilles has bought up a branch of McDonald’s and given it a longer-term future as a community resource.
In December 2019, the franchise owners announced that the restaurant would be sold. Workers suspected they were being targeted because of the strength of their union and led a long-running occupation of the building, turning it into a foodbank during the pandemic. ‘L’Après M’ offered a lifeline to school dropouts and exoffenders in a deprived area of the French city but police threatened to shut it down.
