Regional church bodies still have millions invested in fossil fuels, despite the Church of England’s pledge to start divesting this year from oil and gas, a new investigation by DeSmog, co-published with New Internationalist, has uncovered.
Analysis of annual reports, along with data provided by churches, revealed that the Church of England’s 42 dioceses – groups of churches which directly control their own investments – have an estimated $23.3 million tied up in companies like Shell, BP and Total.
