Thousands of Australian schoolchildren have staged classroom walk-outs in protest against government climate negligence. Nearly15,000 students organized strikes across 30 locations, including Melbourne and Brisbane in late November.
Students carried signs reading ‘procrastinating is our job not yours’ and ‘I’ve seen smarter Cabinets at IKEA’. Activists are getting younger by the year: the strike was inspired by 15-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg who is refusing to attend Friday lessons until the advent of an emissions-free politics. Thunberg tweeted in support of her striking peers: ‘Time for bed in Sweden. But in Australia it’s already morning… stand strong Australia. We are with you.’
