Africa's $10-billion energy project faces problems.
A $10-billion African energy project, negotiated at the UN’s 2015 Climate Change Conference (COP21), is facing myriad problems after criticism from African civil-society organizations and a high-profile resignation.
The African Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI) was billed as an African-owned, African-driven project to bring 10,000 megawatts of clean energy to 600 million people by 2030. But civil-society groups have accused the European Union and France of ‘hijacking’ the project.
