Three-part harmonies and independence songs for West Papua are brought to you by the Black Orchid String Band (BOSB). This big band’s eponymously titled debut album had a (very) soft release a few months ago, but its message and its medium remains fresh. The album is in the process of being put online for streaming; find the BOSB via Facebook in the first instance.
A welcome reissue for avant-garde trumpeter Jon Hassell’s Dream Theory in Malaya (Glitterbeat). This 1981 album introduced Hassell’s concept of Fourth World music in which sounds are detached from a deterministic setting to make for more impressionistic linking. Brian Eno, Nusrat Fateh Fali Khan and Daniel Lanois feature on this quietly influential album.
