In what could be a world first, the expansion of Austria’s biggest airport has been blocked because of concerns about climate change. In February, the Federal Administrative Court ruled that any economic benefits from adding a third runway to Vienna International Airport would be outweighed by the damage to the environment and hundreds of hectares of agricultural land.
The court argued that the construction of the runway at the airport, through which over 23 million passengers passed in 2016, would contravene national and international climate-mitigation obligations.
