In a quiet corner of Stansted airport, often in the dark of the night, private planes – paid for by the British government – are regularly being used to deport people the state no longer wants within its borders.
Campaigners say around three or four of these flights – each holding up to 100 people – take off each month, headed for Albania, Ghana, Nigeria, Pakistan or Jamaica. Deportees on board can include refused asylum seekers, as well as those who have ongoing claims. They could also be people who have been in Britain for decades, leaving behind children and other close family members.
