Lottery sales in EU countries collect around €82 billion each year. Although the majority of these revenues are supposed to benefit society, a new study from Unibet (nin.tl/eulottery) reveals that on average just 10 per cent is actually set aside specifically for charities or good causes.
The most generous European countries are Ireland and Portugal, both of which donate 31 per cent of their lottery revenues to charity. But not all are quite so altruistic: Spain and France donate just two per cent apiece, making them among the least charitable countries in the EU. Britain comes fifth on the list, donating 25 per cent.
